Is searching the United States Patent and Trademark Office database necessary before filing my trademark registration application?

It isn’t necessary, but it is advisable to conduct a search of the United States Patent and Trademark Office database before filing your application to determine if there is a registered or pending mark that is similar to yours. You may use Trademark.com’s free search tool within the application or go directly to the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS) and Trademark Applications and Registrations Retrieval (TARR) database.
