The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) organizes products and services according to specific categories or classes in order to tell the difference between and keep track of registered marks. Trademark owners must register their mark trademark in the appropriate class or classes. There are 45 general categories, with 34 goods categories and 11 services categories.

Goods are physical products that a company sells under a trademark. Services are activities (physical or intellectual) performed for others on a commercial basis under a service mark.
